Job Summary: Works closely with the surgeon to facilitate the procedure and process of surgery following facility protocol and policy as well as laws and regulations. Evaluates perioperative patients and plans, implements and documents surgical nursing care. Performs surgical procedures under the supervision of a surgeon.
Responsible for working in a safe and protective manner at all times keeping in mind that safety and environmental hazards are the responsibility of all employees for themselves, other staff members and patients.
Determines the availability of necessary equipment or supplies for operative procedures.
Provides visualization of the surgical site by appropriate place of retractors, suctioning, sponging, irrigation, etc.
Positions the patient under the direction of the surgeon, giving consideration to the patient’s comfort and safety.
Clamps, ligates or cauterizes blood vessels to control bleeding during surgical entry, using hemostatic clamps, suture ligatures, or electrocautery equipment.
Assists in the insertion, positioning or suturing of closed-wound drainage systems.
Discusses with surgeon the nature of the surgical procedure, including operative consent, methods of operative exposure, diagnostic or laboratory data or patient advanced directives or other needs.
Maintains an unobstructed operative field, using surgical retractors, sponges or suctioning and irrigating equipment.
Meet with patients and family members to answer their questions about the surgery, anesthesia and recovery. Assesses the patient’s physical condition to identify potential problems that could impact surgical procedure.
