Connecticut Children’s Medical Center (Connecticut Children’s) has retained Witt/Kieffer to assist in the recruitment of an Executive Vice President/Chief Operating Officer.
Connecticut Children’s is uniquely positioned as the only freestanding independent children’s hospital between Boston and Philadelphia with satellite facilities throughout Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. The not-for-profit academic medical center (187 beds) is the home of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics. Offering a broad range of services, Connecticut Children’s is the principal training site not only for pediatrics, but for the pediatric components of many other graduate medical education programs. Additionally, Connecticut Children’s has recently developed a highly collaborative research partnership with The Jackson Laboratory which is world renowned for its genomic research. U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks Connecticut Children’s as one of the nation’s “Best Children’s Hospitals.”
In this highly visible role, the EVP/COO will report directly to Jim Shmerling, President and CEO of Connecticut Children's Medical Center. Since joining the organization in October of 2015, Jim Shmerling has worked closely with Connecticut Children’s Board of Directors and his leadership team to establish several strategic options for growth in the New England pediatric healthcare market.
Operational excellence and physician alignment are paramount to the achievement of these growth strategies. The EVP/COO will play a pivotal role in partnering with a wide range of key stakeholders to ensure key strategies become operational realities. This executive will have accountability for a diverse portfolio of line and staff functions that are of critical importance to the success of Connecticut Children’s. The ideal candidate will have executive level hospital operations experience over a diverse array of hospital and ambulatory services and a track record of successfully executing strategic initiatives. To complement this hospital operations experience it is also highly desirable to have leadership experience in children’s hospital and/or academic medical center. Most importantly, this leader must have a passion for pediatric healthcare and enjoy being a part of a team that delivers world-class pediatric care.
This executive will have the opportunity to live and work in an outstanding market. Hartford is known as the “insurance capital” of the United States, a title substantiated with Connecticut ranking No. 1 in the U.S. for insurance employment per capita, with many of those employers located in the Hartford region. U.S. News & World Report recently named Hartford as one of three up-and-coming places to live as the area provides access to great options for housing, great educational options and a wide variety of lifestyle options for food, arts, culture, entertainment and outdoor activities.
