Virginia Premier Health Plan (VPHP), an innovative, provider-owned health plan based in Richmond, Virginia, was formed for the sole purpose of effectively coordinating healthcare for low income persons. It is owned by the No. 1 hospital in Virginia and the Richmond area, Virginia Commonwealth University Health System. VPHP currently serves approximately 260,055 members and operates in more than 80 counties in central, eastern, western, and southwestern Virginia.
VPHP is seeking a board certified psychiatrist to serve as Medical Director of its behavioral health program. This is a newly created role as a result of the expansion of Medicaid benefits to include substance abuse. The Medical Director, Behavioral Health is responsible for building the organization’s behavioral health program from within.
Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer, the Medical Director, Behavioral Health will play a key role with the medical management activities, including utilization management, quality improvement, credentialing, and pharmacy for behavioral health and substance abuse disorders to improve the healthcare delivery system. Working within this regional health plan setting, the Medical Director will enjoy a variety of responsibilities and gain valuable mentoring and coaching experience to expand professional development within physician leadership. This individual will review cases, research medical literature, and participate in the development of programs and policies that dramatically improve the mental health and wellbeing of individuals with complex medical conditions.
The Medical Director, Behavioral Health will also serve as a member of the VPHP Health Quality Utilization Management (HQUM) Committee.

The successful candidate will have a current, unrestricted Virginia license or the ability to become licensed in Virginia, and a minimum of five years of clinical experience. This role requires an individual who has the ability to work with colleagues and other healthcare professionals to resolve utilization and quality management issues. Experience in managed care medical management is preferred.
