Position Purpose Responsible for reducing Death to Approval (DTA) by requesting/reviewing relevant medical records.
Essentials Duties and Responsibilities • Supports the Mission, Vision, and Values of LEITR and exhibits a personal commitment to organ, eye and tissue donation • Request and/or obtain primary and secondary charts for donors (i.e., hospital, hospice, ER, EMS, Medical Examiner documentation, etc.) • Perform preliminary review of cases coming in from the field to check for accuracy and completeness and make corrections as necessary in preparation of Quality review • Perform comprehensive donor medical history reviews from medical charts, behavioral data, laboratory data, and other pertinent information from a variety of sources • Enter case information into LEITR’s database • Utilizes remote access Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) to screen cases as needed prior to DSC dispatching staff • Performs all job functions in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations, Eye Bank Association of American Medical Standards, and LEITR standard operating procedures • Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, Ability • Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with all Eye Bank, hospital, and peer agency staff • Must be able to work days, nights, weekends and long hours when needed • Must have reliable, dependable transportation to and from work. Company vehicle provided for recovery • Effective interpersonal and organizational skills • Strong attention to detail • Good computer skills, i.e., Outlook, Word, etc. • Ability to adapt to changing technology implemented to stay competitive • Ability to operate a facsimile and copy machines • Strong working knowledge of aseptic technique, applicable state and federal regulations, Eye Bank Association of America Medical Standards, and LEITR standard operating procedures.
Education and Experience • High School diploma or equivalent • Education or experience in the fields of science and/or health care, preferably surgical technician or ophthalmic technologist, medical examiners, Military Medic or funeral home background preferred • Eye bank or transplant experience preferred • Complete EBAA Technician Education Symposium (TES) and earn a Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT) within 12 months of employment. LEITR will pay for initial TES and CEBT course/exam fees. If employee fails to successfully complete either, subsequent testing is the responsibility of employee • A valid driver’s license/insurance/required
Work Environment The work environment described here are representative of those employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to a laboratory-like environment and office like-environment. The noise level is usually low. Open discussions about donor health and circumstances of death occur throughout the day. Equipment required for this position include but are not limited to, sterile supplies that may contain latex, surgical gloves, surgical instruments, and sterile attire, PPE, slit lamps and specular microscopes, flow hoods, standard office space and equipment, standard PC equipment and printers, and telephone and/or headset.
Physical Demands The physical demands, representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job include, but are not limited to: regularly required to sit, stand, talk, see and hear; needing to possess conversational hearing, with or without aid, as well as adequate vision, with or without aid; Ability to perform delicate manual procedures requiring high amounts of dexterity; Ability to lift and/or move over 50 pounds. Willingness to work outside of usual business hours including weekends and holidays, on-call shifts, and following through with tasks that may continue past scheduled shift times.
