:Health and Hospital Systems
Assists with the performance, maintenance and accreditation activity of the Cancer Registry for Cook County Health & Hospitals System (CCHHS). Reviews patient records for case findings, abstracting and follow-up activities as required by the American College of Surgeons (ASoC) and Illinois State Cancer Registry (ISCR). Participates in medical staff committee meetings to provide specific and aggregate data for the medical staff to make cancer care plans. Performs a wide variety of other duties to support accreditation of the CCHHS Cancer Registry Program.
Assists with the implementation and maintenance of the electronic cancer data system
(IMPAC-ELEKTA METRIQ) as mandated by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (ACoSCoC) and other regulatory agencies
Performs edit check procedure on all coded data according to ISCR and ACoS standards in order to assure the integrity of all cancer data and patient follow-up information; submits required data to Illinois State Cancer Registry (monthly) from all applicable cases; reports appropriate cancer cases to National Cancer Database (yearly) as required by agreement and program standards
Codes all follow-up information received from solicited sources on proper documents for computer input; provides support with compiling and providing cancer related statistical reports on request from medical staff, researchers and administrative staff
Clarifies conflicting documentation in medical records pertinent to primary site, extent of disease and stage
Assists in the production of the annual Cancer Program Reports as well as preparing agenda, recording minutes and circulating documents for Cancer Committees and the Subcommittee of the Cancer Program; prepares drafts of QI reports of Cancer Committee activities
Assists with collection of complete AJCC or appropriate staging by collecting diagnoses, morphology, topography, treatments, extent of disease, state of cancer, follow-up attempts and treatments and other demographic data, applying various morphology coding to conditions and entering the data into the database
Accurately captures data elements required by the American College of Surgeons by reading inpatient and outpatient medical records, death certificates, pathology reports and autopsy reports of all patients eligible for cancer registration
Completes AJCC staging/abstracting forms by collecting diagnoses, morphology, topography, treatments, extend of disease, state of cancer, follow-up and other demographic data; applies coding to conditions and enters data into database
Reviews various reports such as ICD10 codes for treated patients, operative logs, operative reports, pathology reports, etc. to identify patients that should be added to the cancer registry; finds appropriate patient records and completes abstracting process
Communicates both verbally and in written format with other healthcare providers (hospitals, physicians and other healthcare institutions) to respond to Cancer Registry inquiries and to obtain patient records and patient information on cancer patients referred to Stroger Hospital for care or follow-up; communicates with the American College of Surgeons Commission Cancer, the American Cancer society, and the Illinois State Cancer Registry for updates on changes in the standards regulating cancer registry policies and procedures
Participates in national and regional studies (patient care evaluations studies) identified by the Commission on Cancer for the American College of Surgeons and chosen by the Cancer Committee for Medical Staff by abstracting the data elements required
Interacts with the cancer committee at Stroger Hospital and attends hospital-wide conferences, seminars and other educational training workshops related to the cancer registry; maintains current knowledge of cancer trends and developments as well as credentials required by professional associations
Prepares various reports requested by department management and Cancer Committee; provides support with compiling and providing cancer related statistical reports on request from medical staff, researchers and administrative staff; maintains production/abstraction statistics
Assists in the planning and revision of departmental procedures.
Maintains current knowledge of cancer trends, developments, and standards set by the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer, the North American Associate Committee of Central Registries and the Illinois state Cancer Registry regarding cancer registry operations by participating in training activities
Oversees data entry projects related to the cancer registry as needed; performs other duties as assigned
High School diploma or G.E.D.(must provide proof at time of interview)
Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) (must provide proof at time of interview)
One (1) year of experience using hospital based computerized cancer registry software systems is required
One (1) year of hospital registry experience with management and data entry
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology
Knowledge of the standards set by the ACoSCoC, North American Associated Committee of Central Registries (NAACoCR) and ISCR
Knowledge of operation and use of computer hardware, software and network systems
