What you will be responsible for:

• Oversees the daily operations of the phlebotomy team, ensuring each shift is appropriately staffed with competent phlebotomists.
• Trains all new phlebotomy staff to insure that training is consistent.
• Responsible for maintaining the competencies of phlebotomists and processors.
• Maintains the phlebotomy attendance log
• Must be able to perform all functions of the phlebotomy or processor positions.
• Schedules the phlebotomy team for coverage on all shifts
• May be required to work at the outpatient area, Memorial MedLabs, Florida Hospital-Oceanside, or
• Other facility and cover different shifts as needed.
• Perform phlebotomy on inpatients and/or outpatients according to procedure.
  • Correctly identify the patient
  • Wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Able to locate a venipuncture site
  • Draw specimens in the proper order
  • Correctly label tubes at bedside/patient side
  • Label tubes with time and Destiny id
  • Apply dressing
• Properly dispose of Sharps and Biohazardous material
• Deliver specimens to the Processing area or appropriate department
• Use computer for various tasks
  • Log-in specimens
  • Generate and fax patient reports when requested
  • Cancel tests at the request of the floor
  • Generate collection labels
  • Generate and work collection lists
  • Register patients
• Perform laboratory assistant duties
  • Empty tube system, log-in and deliver specimens to Processing
  • Answer telephone, solve problems, route calls for others correctly
• • Identify patient by use of photo ID
  • Properly fill out forms
  • Secure specimen for transport
  • Collect Chain of Custody specimens per procedure
• Must be able to do registration including the entering of patient demographics, insurance information, Medical Necessity and ordering of tests.
• Perform other duties as assigned or as needed
• Supervises the phlebotomy team under the direction of the Support Services Coordinator, under the general supervision of the laboratory director
• Supervise the daily activities of the other phlebotomists to ensure that all work is completed accurately, timely and efficiently

What you will need:

• High School diploma or equivalent. 
• Completion of Phlebotomy training program or equivalent work experience basic office and computer skills required.
• Minimum of three to five years phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting. 
• Customer service skills required.
• Computer Skills
• Expertise in Phlebotomy in all age groups
• Contact with patients requires compassion and thoughtfulness because of the invasive procedure used in collecting blood specimens.
• Tact is required in dealing with the patients, their family, the nursing staff and physicians
• Common courtesy is also required when on the telephone
• Common courtesy and a helpful attitude towards coworkers are necessary

Job Summary:

The Lead Phlebotomist is responsible for the day to day functioning of the Phlebotomy and Processing team under the guidance and direct supervision of the Support Services Supervisor.  The person filling this position must be able to cover all functions and fill in as needed.  They are responsible for the training and competency of the phlebotomists and processors.
