The incumbent serves as a generalist in medical technology with responsibility for performing procedures in the areas of chemistry (including endocrinology and toxicology), hematology, coagulation., urinalysis, immunology, immunohematology (blood banking), serology, microbiology (may include mycology, parasitology, and virology), and specimen procurement and processing. The generalist medical technologist rotates with other generalists on a regular basis through the above-mentioned areas. Applicants will be referred on a rotating basis until a selection is made. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRPEDRP), a student loan reimbursement program. If selected for this position you must meet specific individual eligibility requirements, and submit your application within four months of appointment. The final award amount (up to $200,000 ) and eligibility period (one to five years) is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office. Duties include but are not limited to: Evaluates the suitability of the specimen for analysis, requesting new specimen if determined to be unusable. Prepares specimens for analysis, insuring that the physiologic state of the specimen properties is maintained. Performs a broad range of laboratory procedures including all testing and tasks of the medical laboratory technician occupation. In addition, performs complex laboratory procedures; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles with immediate or general supervision. Maintains and documents the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment. Uses, calibrates, identifies malfunctions, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment. Diagnoses deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction with immediate or general supervision. Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis taking into account physiologic processes and requirements. Maintains appropriate levels of supplies and reagents for the efficient operation of the clinical laboratory. Adheres to practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace. Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors. In collaboration with senior technologists interprets results and suggests follow-up test selection or procedures. Assists with evaluating and implementing new techniques and procedures in the laboratory in terms of equipment, method comparison, and establishment of reference intervals using statistical methods and theoretical knowledge. Interprets findings and makes recommendations. Work Schedule: Available shifts include: Tuesday-Friday 12:30pm-10:30pm or 1:00pm-11:00pm; Monday-Friday 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm. 1 Available Shift for: Monday-Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.
